Mums the WORD.
As Black Mothers, we speak from our chests on our podcast and we write from our chests in our blog. Gain insight into our heads, hearts, and hormones. Pull up a chair, we have A LOT to say.
BLACK HAIR AND BLACK FEMININITY- In partnership with Dove
‘Nothing is quite so exquisitely feminine as long locks. Mermaids, Disney princesses, Renaissance paintings – all of these art forms depict women with flowing tresses. Men like your long hair for the same reasons they like high heels and dresses; because it looks feminine.’
Nope, this isn’t a sardonic section from a feminist article from the New York Times, this is the gospel according to hair-development.com…
COMING OUT
I write this from a very new space, I am a mother of 3, with an older bonus child. I am a lesbian also. But this lesbian is newly separated and learning who I am as a mother and woman again.
WHEN RAISING A CHILD ISN’T A CHOICE
‘Parenthood’ was thrust on me, literally overnight. I put parenthood in inverted commas because I’m not yet a parent in the birth-right sense, but I am walking along the parenthood path, if you will. I’m a legal guardian to my now 14 year old cousin. Judging by the multi-billion-dollar anti-aging market, we are not so keen.
THE ONLY BLACK IN THE VILLAGE - PART II. BUS SHELTERS
My mother always said not to get caught up in any trouble, as being black, I would be the one people would blame. Of course, I didn’t believe her. I always knew this was a way…
THE ONLY BLACK IN THE VILLAGE – PART I. BECOMING BLACK
I used to say I was born in Croydon which was actually a lie. I was born in a hospital in Kent, to a blonde-haired-blue-eyed-forty-something-year-old woman and an African…
MODERN DAY MYSTICISM AND BLACK GIRL MAGIC.
Is ‘manifesting’ and ‘working the laws of attraction’ the new ‘Netflix and Chill’? We know that we are officially the post milk generation… so are we the official post religion generation too?
SINGLE MAMA, RETURN TRIP!
Our very own Dope Black Mum Endy Mckay has been away in Copenhagen this half term. In 2016 Endy and her single mother friend decided to take their five year olds away to…
